Finding University Place Residents
The best first record depends on what is known. An address belongs in the Pierce County parcel search. A full name can be checked against the voter resource, court index, recorded-document parties, or a dated directory. An older street address belongs in the Tacoma Suburban Polk volumes. Each source describes a different relationship between a person and University Place. The taxpayer named on a parcel may receive tax mail but live elsewhere. A deed party may have sold long ago. A directory entry is a snapshot from its publication year.
Build a short record trail and save the retrieval date. Two independent sources that agree on name, place, and time are much stronger than one loose match. Current renters, people who do not vote, confidential-address participants, and households absent from a published directory may not appear at all. No official roll lists every resident.
- Search the Pierce County property roll with the street address or owner name.
- Check the lawful public fields available through Washington voter resources.
- Use the recorded-document index to identify dated deeds or other filings.
- For earlier households, search a matching Tacoma Suburban directory year.
- Ask the proper custodian for an offline file or certified copy when needed.
University Place Records Custodians
University Place is not the Pierce County seat. City Hall keeps council, planning, permit, complaint, and other municipal records, but the main property, deed, election, and Superior Court systems are county or state services. The city's Public Records Request Center also identifies contracted records held by other agencies. Start with the office that created the record. The full address workflow belongs in the University Place street directory.
Pierce County Auditor
2401 S. 35th St., Room 200
Tacoma, WA 98409
253-798-7440
The Auditor counter and Elections office generally list weekday hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Confirm hours before travel. Assessor records are public search leads; the Auditor's certified deed is the better source for a formal ownership question.
Start With the University Place Address
The Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer directs the public to Parcel and Sales Search for searches by parcel, address, or name. A parcel result can connect a University Place site to a taxpayer or owner-related name, parcel number, legal description, assessed value, land-use code, tax area, sales history, and recorded-document links. A parcel is the county's numbered unit of land. The situs address describes the land's physical location, while the mailing address shows where tax correspondence goes.
Use the address as printed, then try a normalized version if it fails. Keep the directional and street suffix. For an apartment or multi-parcel development, compare the map and legal description before attaching a name to a door. A tax-mail recipient may be a trustee, business, relative, or lender, so carry the parcel number into the deed index.
The official assessor entry page is shown below.
That county landing page is the reliable starting point even when the live parcel interface changes its field labels.
Reading University Place Deed Results
The Pierce County Auditor indexes deeds, mortgages, liens, plats, easements, leases, covenants, and other recorded documents. In ARMS public access, a search can use a party name and date, then open an instrument number, sort results, and save a watermarked image when that category is viewable. A grantor is generally the party giving an interest; a grantee receives it. Those roles matter when tracing who owned a University Place parcel at a specific time.
- Index
- A finding list with names, dates, document types, and instrument references.
- Certified copy
- An official copy authenticated by the records custodian.
- Legal description
- The formal land description that follows the parcel even when an address changes.
- Plat
- A recorded map that divides land into lots, blocks, or other tracts.
Online search is free, but the county warns that a parcel-linked result is not a complete title history. Some document categories have no public online image. Ask Recording Copies for a certified or restricted copy, use the counter, or mail a written request with the required payment. Older material may require Washington Digital Archives or the Puget Sound Regional Branch.
The ARMS search screen gives a direct view of the county's recorded-document route.
Use the instrument number from the result to request the right copy instead of relying on a name alone.
Current University Place Directory Sources
Several official systems work like partial resident directories. None has universal coverage, and each has a different legal purpose. The table separates what a record can show from what a researcher might be tempted to assume.
| Official source | Useful connection | Custodian | Public route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parcel and tax roll | Taxpayer lead, situs, mailing address | Pierce Assessor-Treasurer | Free parcel search |
| Voter record | Registration name, public address, jurisdiction | Washington SOS | VoteWA and lawful list request |
| Recorded documents | Parties to deeds and other instruments | Pierce Auditor | ARMS, counter, mail, archives |
| Court index | Case party, court, filing, disposition clues | Washington Courts and Pierce Clerk | State search, LINX, clerk copies |
| City records | Names in public city business and permits | University Place Clerk | Pages, counter, records request |
For one name, record the role and date beside every match. A deed party, permit applicant, voter, and court party are not interchangeable labels. A careful University Place resident lookup compares those roles instead of merging them.
University Place Voter Record Limits
Washington law makes selected voter fields public, subject to exclusions. Under RCW 29A.08.710, those fields can include name, address, political jurisdiction, gender, year of birth, voting record, registration date, and registration number. Voting history means participation, not a person's ballot choices. The original registration application is confidential, and protected participants or people under 18 are excluded as state law provides.
A March 2026 change directs statewide voter-file requests to the Secretary of State. It also protects full birth dates, Social Security numbers, and driver-license or ID fields. Pierce County Elections remains the local service point, while Washington Elections supplies the state route. Keep the lookup date because registration addresses and statuses change.
Verifying University Place Name Matches
Exact spelling is only the start. Search middle initials, former surnames, suffixes, and reasonable variants, then narrow by Pierce County and a sound date range. Compare each result with a second independent source. A deed recording, voter entry, court case, business filing, vital event, obituary, or directory year can supply the needed time and place link. Same-name people are common, so an undated list of hits does not establish identity.
The statewide Washington Courts search can locate cases by person, case number, or attorney. Pierce County Superior Court documents filed from 2002 onward are generally found through LINX. Records from 1991 through 2001 can be requested for scanning, while pre-1991 files require a Clerk inquiry. A docket is the dated list of events in a case; a disposition records the outcome. A charge line is not the same as a final result.
Correct an error with the custodian that owns it. Elections handles voter data, the Assessor-Treasurer handles parcel data, the Auditor handles recording-index issues, and the Clerk handles court records. Save the URL, search terms, date, and result status.
University Place Court Routing
University Place municipal services operate through a city-county partnership with Pierce County District Court. City matters include misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, traffic or other infractions, and parking or photo infractions arising in the city. Search the state index first, then verify the full file with the court that served the case. Superior Court probate, guardianship, divorce, and other county files belong with the Pierce County Clerk.
The online route is only one channel. The Pierce court-record request page explains copy and scanning paths, including older-file handling, mail, and audio procedures. Sealed, juvenile, and confidential material does not become public because a name appears elsewhere. When a case matters for family history or an estate, request the relevant document and read its party role, filing date, and disposition together.
Note: A court name match is a lead, not proof that the party is the University Place resident being researched.
When University Place Portals Fail
A blank web result can reflect coverage, spelling, a changed street form, an offline volume, or a portal problem. It does not prove the record never existed. For deeds, take the names, date window, parcel number, and document type to the Auditor counter or send a mail request. Washington Digital Archives can bridge indexed Pierce recordings from 1975 and 1984 forward, with some 1973 material, while earlier holdings are collection-specific at the Puget Sound Regional Archives.
For city permits and complaints, use the University Place request center or City Clerk because no public result grid was located. For court documents, move from LINX to a scan request or Clerk inquiry based on the filing year. For historical residents, ask the Tacoma Public Library Northwest Room to retrieve a directory, newspaper, obituary, map, or Buildings Index item from closed stacks. Pierce County Library also offers genealogy databases and some microfilm access.
A narrow request works best. Give the address, parcel or case number when known, record type, date span, and preferred format. Ask about redactions and cost before ordering a large file.
Historical University Place Resident Directories
Many older University Place residents appear under Tacoma Suburban or unincorporated Pierce County because the city incorporated in 1995. R.L. Polk suburban volumes are especially useful. The researched inventory includes 1919; 1922 through 1928; 1930; 1933; 1935 through 1942; 1949; 1951; 1955 through 1963; 1965 through 1966; 1968 through 1970; 1972; 1974; 1976; and 1983. A directory can associate a household name with an address for one publication year, but it is not a continuous government roll.
The Northwest Room holds city directories, newspapers, obituary indexes, maps, photographs, and building files. Its materials are in closed stacks, so staff retrieval is part of the process; cameras and USB scans may be available. Washington State Library appointments and Pierce County Library's HeritageQuest route provide alternatives. Browse full shelf and reading methods in the University Place city directory collections.
University Place Address Alias Clue
A Northwest Room Buildings Index entry links 8809 36th St W with the former form 8809 So. 36th St. It describes a circa-1956 rambler and points to a 1958 suburban directory association. That one verified item shows why a historical University Place residents directory search should preserve directionals, suffixes, and earlier address forms. It does not prove a citywide renumbering event.
A second item is just as useful. The index describes 2220 N Mason Ave as vacant in a 1956 directory, absent in 1957, and connects the area with a newspaper notice about moving an old house and a nearby number. A missing address can result from a structure or numbering change, not a missing household. Search the legal description, adjacent parcel numbers, directories on both sides of the gap, and dated newspaper notices.
Note: Keep the original historical address in research notes and add the modern form separately.
University Place Vital Record Access
The Washington Department of Health issues state birth, death, fetal-death, marriage, and divorce records. Certified birth and death copies are limited to qualified applicants. The state describes noncertified informational birth and short death copies as open to anyone, but those products have different legal value. Historical records transfer to the State Archives after 100 years for births and fetal deaths, and after 25 years for deaths, marriages, and divorces. Archival age does not by itself create eligibility for every certified copy.
Orders may be placed through state online, mail, or in-person routes, and local health departments can handle some birth and death requests. Pierce County Auditor handles copies of Pierce-issued marriage licenses under county and state timing rules. Supply the event type, name, date, place, and proof of eligibility where required. For genealogy, first check whether an informational or archival route fits before paying for a certificate.
University Place Records Act Requests
The Washington Public Records Act, RCW 42.56, applies to nonexempt agency records. Under RCW 42.56.520, an agency generally responds within five business days by producing the record, acknowledging the request with a time estimate, seeking clarification, or denying it with the legal reason. That is a response deadline, not a promise that every file arrives within five days.
Send a University Place request to the agency that holds the record. City Hall can route municipal records, but property taxes, sewer connections, septic files, police, fire, utilities, and older permits may sit with named county or contracted custodians. Describe a record rather than asking an office to answer a question. Dates, addresses, permit numbers, subjects, and file types keep the request manageable. Ask for electronic delivery when practical and review any copying estimate before work begins.
University Place Records Geography
University Place covers 8.34 square miles and had a 2024 population estimate of 35,160. The compact city sits within a much larger Pierce County record system. City limits, postal names, fire or utility service areas, and ZIP boundaries do not always line up. That is why a valid University Place mailing label may still need a GIS check before a city-record request.
The city's name also creates a historical search trap. Puget Sound University planned a move to the area in the early 1890s and bought 420 acres, but the plan failed during the 1893 financial crisis. The University Place name survived. Before incorporation, directories and newspapers may use Tacoma suburban or unincorporated Pierce County labels. Chambers Bay records can likewise move from lumber, railroad, and gravel uses to the modern recreation landscape.
Use the old label exactly as printed, then add the modern place interpretation. That preserves what the source says while making the record easier to connect.
Protected University Place Addresses
Washington's Address Confidentiality Program gives qualified survivors a substitute mailing address. Voter records also exclude protected fields and ACP participants as state law directs. DMV addresses, sealed adoption records, confidential health details, juvenile matters, and redacted identity fields are not ordinary resident-directory material.
Use only the public fields supplied by the custodian. Do not combine records to defeat a safety program or expose an address that an agency has withheld. Public availability permits lawful research, such as genealogy, reconnecting with relatives, estate work, civic review, or checking a seller's documented role. It never authorizes stalking, intimidation, or unwanted tracking.
Recent University Place Directory Changes
Two 2026 changes affect current research. Statewide voter-database requests now route to the Washington Secretary of State, while Pierce County remains useful for local election help. Separately, Pierce County's ZIP GIS metadata was refreshed in February 2026 and explains that reference ZIP lines are built from county roads and USPS ZIP+4 data. Those lines may diverge from city boundaries and can assign more than one ZIP segment to an area.
Access to older directories also changed. The Washington State Library reports limited Thursday appointments following its July 2025 public closure tied to funding. The Northwest Room and library database routes therefore matter more for University Place directory work. Portal pages, fees, hours, and coverage can change again. Verify the live custodian page before travel or a paid order, and keep a citation date in the research log.
